We titled this book "Working Wagon Wheels" because rims are made double
wide like the wheels on the old cargo wagons. We show making a 3" wide rim but
following the instructions they could be made any width that you want. As with any
subject, there was great debate among wheelwrights how hubs should be made. As
can be seen in the picture on the left it has a heavy hub. We have applied modern
methods and materials to simplify hub construction. Also, while we do not
recommend using these wheels on rolling stock, but if you do, a bronze bushing or
roller bearings could be fitted in the bore of the hub as was done in the late 1800's
and early 1900's. Some of the people in the Civil War reenactment groups have
used these wheels on their cannon which are not pulled behind horses nor carry
people or goods. While these wheels are a challenge, with our step-by-step pattern
book to guide you, the project is within the reach of intermediate to advanced wood
workers.
The book also walks you through putting a light weight steel tire on the rim. And no
as we show on the below you do not have to sweat them on like they did years ago.
